Kids Can Be So Literal

Most kids I have known tend to take things us grown-ups say so literally sometimes. Especially my 7 year old son, which we later on found out lies somewhere in the autistic spectrum and now explains a lot…
When he was 4 years old we were out at Grandma’s farm walking by the ponds several hundred feet from the house. Well, as a little boy that was his first time to get to go potty outside. Daddy taught him how to pee outside…AWESOME!! We never thought twice about it to ever explain to him that you only do that in such circumstances.
Fast forward about a week. I receive a phone call from his baby-sitter, who has 4 other children she is keeping as well, to let me know that he has gone to the bathroom in the backyard for all the world to see. I started lauhing and hen realized she wasn’t. She says “I don’t think you understand, he went number two in the backyard in front of everyone…”
Me and my husband went together to pick him up that day. When we asked him in front of the baby-sitter why he did that, he says “Daddy told me to!” quite emphatically and started towards the car.
We learned that very day with him that we would need to explain things in a different way so there were no more “misunderstandings” like this.
How about you, how often do your kids take something you say at face value? Has it ever put you in an embarrassing predicament?
